1. Why is it not tin-coated?
The tin coating helps in avoiding any kind of toxic reactions with sour things. The coating is not required when eating dry food like rice/ rotis. And it takes time for these metals to react, the reaction does not occur instantly.
2. Why are katoris/glasses silver on the inside?
Katoris have a silver finish on the inside because it is the tin coating which was traditionally called Kalai and is done to keep it from reacting with sour things like curd, buttermilk etc.

Being handcrafted, no two products of these are alike. Thatheras had stopped making these utensils as the concern was about its lack of exact duplication. However, beauty has its own way of being visible. The thalis gradually came in demand. In fact they are sometimes better that machine made products & also heavier.
