WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
Bring your brass and copper cookware back to life with P-TAL’s Kalai Kit—a complete, easy-to-use home solution for restoring traditional utensils through tin coating. Kalai, a timeless practice, keeps cooking surfaces safe, non-reactive, and enhances the taste of food. Once a fading art, this technique now returns in a DIY-friendly kit that preserves your heritage pieces and makes them safe for daily use again. Rediscover tradition. Restore with confidence.
What’s Included
- Certified Tin, also known as Ranga
- Ammonium chloride, which is also called Naushadar salt.
- Heat resistant cotton
- Pitambari cleaning powder
- Holder or Pakad to hold the utensils
- An instruction manual explaining the complete process of doing the kalai.
Details
- Thoroughly wash the utensil inside out and wipe it dry.
- Put it on the stove and give it enough time to heat to the brim. You can check if it's heated to the brim by touching the tin on the brim and seeing if it's melting.
- Once the utensil has been thoroughly heated, add the powdered ammonium chloride in the heated utensil. The fumes will immediately begin to rise. Touch the surface of the tin stick on the utensil and rub it using a heat-resistant cloth.
- Once you see that it's done evenly, put it under cold running water or inside a tub of cold water; this will lock the kalai on the surface.
- In case you notice that some part of the surface is left to be tinned, repeat the process, keeping that area primarily on the heat
CARE AND USE
For everyday care:
- Wash with mild soap and a soft sponge. The naturally non-stick Malaysian tin lining (kalai) makes cleaning brass and copper cookware easier and gentler than other metals.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or steel wool
To maintain the shine:
- Use our de-oxidising cleaning solution or a natural homemade scrub (atta + salt + lemon)
- Dry thoroughly after each wash to prevent watermarks
Note: The tin lining (kalai) is a traditional method that may fade with time. A re-kalai can restore its surface and continue its long life.
